That is what we are taught in school about the Declaration of Independence, but in the real world, these are promises broken. Promises broken particularly for women, indigenous people and people of color, veterans, the senior and disabled communities, and the LGBTQ+ community, who all face the burden of institutional inequality each and every day.

 

Genuine equality requires confronting the systemic injustice that has developed within the system over hundreds of years. It requires dismantling the structures of racism, sexism, and homophobia that keep people tied down and embracing inclusive policies that uplift all citizens. Unfortunately, we find ourselves moving backwards on these issues as a society, not forward. The Trump administration is determined to cripple this country in the service of Vladimir Putin, and by passing the recent Budget Bullsh*t Bill, they've cemented their path in that direction for the next 3.5 years. They are taking us back to a time of actual segregation - not only condoning but putting racism on display as a virtue and dividing this country more and more every day. They've attacked mothers and hungry children, senior citizens, legal immigrants, poor people and what's left of the middle class with their ruthless, sociopathic cuts and wealth redistribution. The Establishment Democrats, like our own Mike Thompson, failed to stop it and will not suffer as a result of it. In fact, he stands to make gains while the rest of us go broke.

I believe that there are ways to fix this crisis born out of poor leadership. Here is a list of the Changes that I promise to fight for that I believe will lift up our most vulnerable, and in turn, uplift us all.

 

1. Universal Health Care

2. A livable Minimum Wage

3. Free College and Trade School Tuition

4. Increased Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security Spending

5. Increased Clean Energy Production

6. Increased Corporate Taxes/Loophole Elimination

7. Increased Environmental Protection

8. Decreased Taxes for the Middle Income and Lower Wage Earners

9. Eliminate Subsides for Fossil Fuels

10. Drastically Reduce Military Spending​

Providing our citizens with the level of equality and justice that they were promised means protecting every individual's right, regardless of race, gender, veteran status, disability, or sexual orientation to pursue happiness in their lives free from the burden of an oppressive government that would seek to steal their freedom to do so. Achieving true equality requires us to challenge entrenched power structures, confront historical injustices head on, and make thoughtful, substantial investments in marginalized communities.
